Prof. KacprzykHe is the first Pole awarded Vernadskyi Gold Medal by National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine. During his stay in Poland, the medal was presented to him by prof. Anataly Zagorodny, president of NAS.
Vernadskyi Medal was established in 2003 and is the highest distinction awarded by the NAS. Each year, the medal is awarded only to two scientists with outstanding achievements, one from Ukraine and one from abroad. In 2023, it was awarded to prof. Kacprzyk and Volodymyr Horbulin as a result of the competition held in 2022. The Pole received it for outstanding achievements in artificial intelligence, decision-making theory and robotics. The Ukrainian for outstanding achievements in developing the scientific basis of Ukraine’s national security and defense potential.
Short biography
Janusz Kacprzyk, born in 1947, is a Polish engineer, mathematician, and computer scientist. He specialises in AI tools such as fuzzy sets, mathematical optimization, decision-making under uncertainty, computational intelligence, and data mining. They are used, among others, in databases, information and communication technologies and mobile robotics. He is a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, professor of computer science and head of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Systems Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also a president of the Polish Society for Operational and Systems Research, and a member of many international organizations, such as IEEE, IEPP, and IFAS. In 2009-2011, he was the president of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA). In 2013, he won the annual IFSA award. As a lecturer, he worked at Polish and Chinese universities.
He authorized six books, over 100 scientific works, and over 550 scientific articles. Prof. Kacprzyk is the editor of seven Springer Science+Business Media publishing series and two journals. He is a member of the editorial board of approximately 40 scientific journals as well. He is also the winner of several awards for outstanding scientific achievements. The Kaufman Prize for work on the use of fuzzy logic in economics and management and two IEEE CIS Pioneer Awards. First for pioneering work in multistage fuzzy control. Second for contributions to granular computing and computation with words.
