Doctoral students and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań were better than translators from Google, Microsoft, Yandex, Amazon, and Huawei. The team led by Artur Nowakowski took first place in Ukrainian-Czech and Czech-Ukrainian translation. The competition was held as part of the Workshop for Machine Translation 2022 conference.
The task of the scientists was to create the best possible translator, able to translate texts from various fields. This year, the main areas on which the competition was focused were: news, social media, human conversations (e.g., chat), and e-commerce. The Poles won against Google, even though they used only the data provided by the competition organizers. Most defeated systems could use any resources, which usually leads to much better translation quality, as in the case of Google or Microsoft systems, but this did not happen this time. Creating the translation system took about two months. At that time, young Poles tried various methods based on neural networks that would be able to get the best possible translation. An efficient computing server was needed to create the system, which they purchased as part of the Center for Artificial Intelligence of Adam Mickiewicz University.
